Scientific research reveals Essential oils have great potential in the field of biomedicine to effectively destroy several types of pathogens.
Different types of aldehydes, phenolics, terpenes, and other antimicrobial compounds are found in the leaves, bark, roots, wood and flowers of plants. When essential oils are extracted many of these constituents remain. When applied to skin correctly and safely and at the correct potency, essential oils are effective against not only bacteria but also a diverse range of pathogens.
Schnitzler investigated the antiviral activity of star anise (Aniseed) essential oil as well as compounds such as eugenol (Clove). Various other studies into certain compounds in Thyme, Lemon Myrtle and Lemon Tea Tree revealed a promising although not proven alternative against viral infections. The detailed understanding of the antiviral action of essential oils still requires more research.
Viral diseases are a major problem for human health worldwide. So far, only a limited number of drugs are effective against many of these viruses, which has prompted further research into the plant kingdom.
